Installing a Sump Pump

What is a Sump Pump?

A sump pump is a water removal appliance used to keep basements and crawl spaces dry. It is installed in a basin called a sump pit, which is dug into the floor of the basement or crawl space. When the water level in the sump pit rises, the pump automatically turns on and pumps the water out of the pit and away from the home. Sump pumps are essential for preventing flooding in basements and crawl spaces, which can cause significant damage to the home and its contents.

When to Install a Sump Pump?

Sump pumps are typically installed in homes that are located in areas with high water tables or that are prone to flooding. They are also installed in homes that have been built on slopes or in areas with poor drainage. If you are unsure whether or not you need a sump pump, you can contact a local plumber to have your home evaluated.

How to Install a Sump Pump?

Installing a sump pump is a job that is best left to a professional plumber. However, if you are comfortable working with electrical and plumbing systems, you can install a sump pump yourself. Here are the steps involved in installing a sump pump:

  1. Choose a location for the sump pump. The pump should be installed in the lowest point of the basement or crawl space. It should also be located away from any obstacles, such as walls, pipes, and ducts.
  2. Dig a sump pit. The sump pit should be large enough to accommodate the sump pump and should be dug to a depth of at least 18 inches. The pit should also be lined with gravel to help prevent the pump from clogging.
  3. Install the sump pump. The pump should be placed in the sump pit and secured with bolts. The pump should also be connected to the discharge pipe, which will carry the water away from the home.
  4. Connect the sump pump to a power source. The pump should be connected to a dedicated electrical circuit. The circuit should be protected by a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) to prevent electrical shocks.
  5. Test the sump pump. Once the sump pump is installed, it should be tested to make sure that it is working properly. To test the pump, pour water into the sump pit until the pump turns on. The pump should pump the water out of the pit and away from the home.
